Giles did not know why he bothered, but he cleaned up the apartment. Admittedly, it had been somewhere between cesspool and bio-hazardous waste disposal facility before, so the least that he could do was give the place a complete top to bottom cleaning. It was also no small fact that there was going to be some rather powerful and pervasive magick that was going to be worked within the hour, and a messy casting circle could lead to disaster, if not a few headaches in the aftermath of the spell. Moving furniture to the side, and keeping it free of clutter meant that there would be fewer mishaps when it came to astral magicks...

It also kept his hands and mind busy so that he would not worry too much about the particulars of the night. There were so many things that could go wrong. Or worse, there were so many things that could go right and have it all be for nothing. What if Anya's soul could not leave Hell? What if something had happened to Buffy and he had waited too long to retrieve her? What if him and Willow had been wrong, and sending people in after them was the exact wrong thing to do? Yes, Willow agreed with him, but that did not end the fact that he was senior caster here. He had more experience than anyone else he had asked to come, maybe more than all of them combined, which meant that they trusted him to know what he was talking about.

The truth was, though, this was all a theory. And it was very, very dangerous.

He started the kettle. No sense in being a poor house host, especially when he was asking people to put their lives on the line. There was a strange juxtaposition as he took the kettle and set it on the table in the living room, just a few feet shy of where Buffy's body lay. There was a precise chalk circle around her, marked with sigils of power and focus. They kept her body and live and stable while her soul was not within. They were also supposed to worked as a tether so that she could return to her body once she was done, Almost a whole year now, Buffy had been gone. A whole year of her life lost to this.

How on Earth was he going to explain it her when she got back?

Setting the kettle down, he thought for a moment about an addition and decided in favor of it. He set a bottle of bourbon by the kettle, in case anyone was so inclined to needing it. He would continue to fuss around the small, New York City apartment, until the first of the circle arrived.

home again, home again

There were a lot of things that Willow had to admit that there were quite a few things that bothered her, but on the way from JFK to Giles' apartment, New York Taxi's were currently at the very top of that list. Maybe it was in part due to the nerves about what was going on, but Willow felt like a cat that needed to be peeled off the ceiling. Blessedly there was a much needed distraction for the ride in getting Faith completely caught up on everything that she'd been made aware of as far as Buffy's condition and what at least part of the plan was for tonight.

A very softly whispered 'don't pay attention to me' charm to the cab driver meant that they could speak in privacy, having the man only thinking that they were talking about something he didn't care about instead of Magick, Slayers, and Hell portals. Unless of course the taxi driver was a supernatural and the inner workings of such things just incredibly bored him to death, which would have been a very interesting twist, unfortunately Willow had very little way of knowing if that was the case.

Despite how much it had hurt her to see it, Willow didn't mention just how bad Giles had gotten while he'd had no help; Giles was always very private when it came to his breakdowns and Willow wasn't going to betray that confidence. It went without saying that Giles would have done everything possible in his power to help the pair, and also that he was very upset about the whole thing. Letting the brunette Slayer know just how bad wouldn't make any difference, she fully intended to keep Giles' confidences.

As she climbed out of the cab after paying, Willow realized that she hadn't stopped almost at all since she'd left the other realm this morning and she had no intention of even slowing down until Buffy and Anya were both safe and sound at home. Walking in she wasn't surprised at all to discover Giles had not only tidied up, but he was stress making tea. She fixed him with a smile that showed more confidence than she felt. She was 90% positive that they had this, that everything was going to go according to hypothesis and by tonight all would be right with the world.

It was that last little 10% that made Willow want to find a blanket to hide under until everyone stopped looking at her. But Buffy needed them, Anya needed them, and they were going to get them back, damnit.

"How many more are we waiting for?"

The day had arrived. Azarias was waiting for this all week. He was ready to show Giles he'd be a great watcher. The new found desire was swallowing him whole; however, it breeds more positive aftermath than curses for laters time. The blue eyed demon got to his destination as fast as possible with no pit stops. This was everything he ever wanted. He arrived at the building with a black bag, tennis shoes, cargo sweats, and a T-shirt. Something told him don't wear black on that day but Azarias felt he'd be overthinking it, so onward he went. Nervousness swam through the veins of the blue eyed hunter as every step he took inside the building towards the destined apartment took him to a piece of a memory. That is, until he felt the energy of something before he even reached for the doorknob. The psychic energy felt coded of some sort by Azarias mental evaluation. After a deep breath and a quick grounding Azarias turned the knob and made his way inside.

Closing the door behind him slowly, Azarias took no time in looking around. His focus had changed. The energy he felt previously had completely pushed his attention and anxiety. The demon walked through the door like he knew the place or something. Which he didn't. But his intuition was pulling him and before he had knew it he dropped the bag next to him. Quite literally a few feet from the circle. There she was. Buffy Summers. A woman he read about but at the time didn't know who she was. Whoever she was, Azarias felt her life force from where he was standing. The spell and it's inner subject's mixture of energy was like a potent fragrance to Vie's sensory system. Azarias had accidentally walked past both Willow and Giles in his fast entrance.

....That wasn't his plan.

"Lets get this party started." was his choice of greeting words. The tone was playful but his body language showed a complete focus to the situation. Azarias had eyes that bounced from the sigils to every inch of the circle. Curiosity rung his face. Azarias did a long distance aura reading technique right on the spot. By focusing on Buffy and the spell Azarias tapped in. He didn't say anything else. He knew the magick that was going on the moment his eyes laid eyes on it. Another confirmation was exactly where he needed to be. Where the fights that matters. It wasn't chumps magick.

Azarias has learned how to psychically read almost anything he put his mind to. Especially magical subjects. He didn't expect to get a large amount of information. Azarias didn't know the details but did not need to, the demon was a quick study. Plopping onto the floor in Giles clean apartment still very much near the circle, Azarias fixes himself into a not so bad position for meditation. The sigils were the key to his psychic reading: through the spell. As about two minutes before he was shaking in his shoes, but now Azarias found himself quickly getting on the move the moment he walked through the door. As Azarias worked on developing a connection, he periodically made looks towards both of them awaiting for someone to start talking. He didn't mind the mulit-tasking.

To say the story that Willow had to tell during the taxi ride to Giles' place was surprising was a bit of an understatement. Shocking was a better word for it. It took Faith some time to process the information. Luckily, since they were in New York and traveling by car was not the most efficient form of transportation in the city, she had at least a little time to think about it.

Faith had known that Buffy had been off on some hush-hush mission and that Giles was supporting her in it. It had been secretive enough that they even had a "decoy" Buffy out making appearances now and again. That much Faith knew about. What Willow filled her in on though, that Buffy had willing entered a hell dimension to retrieve Anya and she had been stuck there now for a year, basically laying magically comatose in Giles' apartment... Well that she had no idea about. Shocking... yep, that was the word she would go with for that one.

By the time the cab pulled up in front of the building, Faith had wrapped her head around what was going on. At least as much as she needed to. She didn't need to understand all the ins and outs, whys and what fors... All she needed to know was that Buffy was stuck in a hell dimension and Faith was one of those that was going to try and get her out. How exactly they were going to do that, she didn't know that either. But, she had a pretty good idea she was going to go for one hell of a ride and she was mentally preparing herself for that as she followed along with Willow to Giles' place.

Entering the apartment Faith saw Giles and said quietly, "Hey, G." while giving him a brief head nod in the process. Her eyes scanned the room, she couldn't miss the centerpiece that was Buffy, all laid out surrounded by a magical circle. For a moment her gaze lingered on the blonde but then shifted to take in the rest of the room and quickly fell to a pot of tea on a table and an even more welcoming sight sitting next to it. A bottle of booze.

Moving over to the table, without saying a word Faith picked up the bottle, poured some into a glass and took a healthy swig before letting out a long breath. "Good thinkin' G-man, I got a feelin' we're going to be needing this." She held up the bottle to emphasize her point and then set it back down on the table. Then she took another quick sip from her glass and was just about to ask what the plan of attack was when someone new walked in.

Faith stood in silence and watched as the new arrival strolled in like he knew what was going on. Neither Willow or Giles' seemed to be phased by the man but Faith's Slayer sense was prickling the back of her neck.

"Hey now, hold up. What the hell is this? And who's this guy?" Faith jerked a thumb in the general direction of the man who had taken up a seat on the floor in front of Buffy. "I don't know exactly what the sitch is here, but if I'm the one that's going to be making some kind of dive into a hell dimension... I trust you two..." Faith pointed at Willow and then at Giles, "...to watch my back. That guy though..." she cast a hard glare in the man's direction, making it very clear who she was talking about. "No, not so much. Who's the party crasher and I think there are some details that might have been left out as to what is going to happen here. Someone, enlighten me."

Willow's presence within the apartment changed the gears for Giles completely. He had allowed himself his cracks in his veneer when she had been at the apartment previously. That moment, he hoped, would be a rare exception. While he did not feel shame in showing emotion or caring for those around him, right now that was not the mode he needed to be in. He needed to be focused and ready, especially if they were going to be working some powerful soul based magick. The wildcard of their being some budding magick potential in him meant that he needed to be even more centered. He had never needed to worry about it before, but he would be a hypocrite and a fool if he did not remember the lessons he worked so hard on teaching others.

“Two more,” Giles said, simply answering Willow's question. He was circling the room, double checking, triple checking everything. Maybe he was being overcautious, but they could not afford for this to go wrong. One miscalculation could end the ritual prematurely, or end it fatally, or even end in a Freaky Friday situation. “Someone old...” Willow had been the one to pick up Faith at the airport, “And someone new...”

It almost happened on cue. Azarias walked into the apartment, and Giles made a mental note to make sure that the doors were locked when they got started. The landlord was known to be nosy, and he was fairly certain she would walk in and get herself involved directly. He didn't want to account for another variable, and she always seemed deterred by locked doors. Azarias, on the other hand, seemed another creature entirely (literally.) Standing in front of the circle, he seemed focused and ready, and it made Giles feel just that little bit more confident about the whole affair. Whatever someone might suggest about Azarias, Giles had faith that he had been trained well, and that he genuinely wanted to prove himself. If nothing else proved his motivations, he hoped that would be it.

Faith proved that it would not always be that easy, though. Breezing in, she brought with her that slight irreverence that covered up that she knew the truth and how much this mattered. They all had their ways of dealing with stress. If Faith had not come in and honed in on the alcohol, Giles would have been even more concerned. But he could also count on her being cautious. Well, he would not say “cautious,” but paranoid sounded condescending, when really she had every right to question the motives of many of the people around her. Especially strangers. He could not help but grin even just a little when she skipped the tea and went straight for the “hard stuff.” While he was certainly happy to see how far Faith had come, he did hope that there were things about her that would never change.

“Azarias is here,” Giles said, answer Faith's question first, “because I thought we might need him. He has some experience with magick, and it will be nice to have another Watcher with a background in psychic connections with us, especially since I will not be going with you.” He would not spill the beans about Azarias' parentage or that he was an outright psychic. It was hardly his place, and Giles had witnessed first hand the kind of issues that came with that. He had not lied to Willow or Faith with what he told them about Azarias. But, it was the first time any of them were being told that Giles would not be diving into Hell with them. “While Buffy's body is serving as a tether for her own soul, you three will be entering the Hell dimension with your bodies still bonded to you. Azarias will serve as a psychic connection back to this plane. Back to me.” It took an awful lot of trust to allow Azarias to be bonded to him. Giles certainly did hope it was well founded.

“Willow will lead the ritual proper. Faith, you have always had a good Slayer sense, and your connection to Buffy will be indispensable in finding Buffy. Anya will be with her.” He had no doubt that Buffy had succeeded on her mission to find the other woman. “Azarias will bring you all home. And I will be the anchor to keep that lifeline tight. It is complicated, but if we all perform our tasks, hardly impossible.” He rolled up his sleeves, and pointed to the places around the circle that held Buffy. Faith would be at her head, Willow at her feet, and Giles took up the position in the circle on the other side of Azarias. ”The portal will open up under and around Buffy, but the circle will contain it. It is another reason why I will be here: to be sure it does not break from the containment circle. We will have other problems on our hands if that happens.”

He looked to Willow, his explanation complete. Unless there was anything else left to add or ask, he was ready.

As Willow situated herself half into the apartment, the arrival of someone she didn't recognize drew her attention, blinking she trusted that Giles wasn't immediately concerned about it considering how many people he mentioned were going to be joining them, really she was just grateful that they didn't have to wait long at all in order to gather everyone together. It seemed that the stranger was ready and happy to get started however, already placing himself just outside the circle, starting whichever method of centering that he seemed to maybe need before a large ritual. On the heels of the other's entrance, Faith's concerns were more than valid, as always they were asking a Slayer to risk her life without a completely formed plan with a lot of variables that could kick-start the end that came to all Slayers.

Not one of them had ever died of old age.

"Then what you can do, is trust that no matter what, the two of us are going to keep you safe." Willow offered, trying to both reassure Faith that they were going to do everything that they were able and still give Giles a chance to catch them all up on whatever it was that they didn't know. Which she imagined was going to be quite a bit. Herself and Giles had only had a few hours together before to go over their plan before she skipped down to New Orleans and then swung back around to pick Faith up at the airport.

The bomb drop that Giles would not be accompanying them took Willow both by surprise yet somehow, deep inside her she had almost been expecting it. Someone had to stay here, someone had to guard their way out to even give them a chance to not get the rest of them stuck right along with Buffy and Anya, thus completing Willow's earlier 'Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly' analogy.

Most of all of this made sense logistically, if this new Watcher was a psychic, Willow understood completely why Giles would have called him in. A true born psychic would be invaluable in a situation like this, and in the end, Giles always had interesting contacts that he pulled out of seemingly no where. As always, she felt a flash of nerves deep inside herself as she always did when something was relying on her heavily, but she steeled quickly. She could do this, she would do this. Breaking through into a hell dimension wasn't cake, but it was well within something that she could do. Something she would do. For Buffy.

As Giles finished speaking, Willow walked over to Buffy's feet, sinking down onto her heels and taking a deep breath, letting go of anything that wasn't going to be useful in this ritual. The steps were simple, it just required a lot of care and power. No one cared if mortals wandered their way into hell dimensions, because no one was going to be able to find their way out, so who cared about double locking that door? Careful that none of her was set across the line just yet, not until they were ready, Willow breathed out once, green eyes flicking to each person here, some she'd known and trusted for years, some where that trust was a little more shaky but had strengthened over time, and some that her faith was currently blind, but there. They could do this.

Once everyone was in position, Willow stood again, walking around them to the right, the first pass she lit a candle to rest beside each of them, also at the right. The second pass around, she used her thumb to mark each of their foreheads with a bit of oil that she'd picked up while in New Orleans, it would help strengthen the binds that would keep them together. Willow's bare feet didn't make a sound on the floor as she completed a third pass before kneeling back at her place at her best friend's feet and letting her eyes fall closed, old words fell from her lips as she placed her palms on the smooth wood of Giles' apartment floor, she grounded herself there for a moment, that last plateau before the deep plunge before breathing out and pushing deeper, further out. She felt a bit of interdimensional wind rise up around them, playing through anything that would ripple or respond, wrapping around those around the circle, coaxing them into the abyss. Three of them would give in, but on their own terms and of their own free will. Giles needed to resist, but Willow's faith in him, while not as blind as it once was, was still whole and complete.

It would take just a few more seconds, to fully open something to the right dimension and not just into the beyond, there would be no time for playing around right now, they had work to do. When she felt the time was right, Willow stood with a single 'ready?' as a warning to the others who would be following her, her eyes were still closed, she was reacting by the pull of the pulsing energy alone, blocking out at least one other sense was helping to keep her focused. There was only one other word needed before they could cross, and with it said, Willow stepped into the portal without hesitation. The portal that would lead them somewhere familiar to at least two of the adventurers stepping through. A place that was just like their former Southern California Hellmouth, but just slightly... wrong...

"Go."

The psychic had began to pick up small confirmations of a healthy spell and subject. Subject meaning Buffy Summers - The woman he had not yet read intimately. To Azarias the woman he was going to save. Azarias's ears picked up energy from a woman he hadn't noticed when he walked in, this energy was getting in the middle of Azarias concentration. The energy usually wouldn't bother him but the particular energy signature was starting to be much more noticeable. As Azarias senses started to shift from Buffy to the woman behind him, the energy signatures began to show similarities. Energy similarity wasn't rare but it also wasn't common. The psychic had broke complete connection to Buffy psychically: Faith had broken his focus but he managed to get enough information he needed from one slayer. The one emitting a level of irritation however had propelled Azarias to physically get up from his position to face the talking nobody. Azarias turned gave the woman a condensed unbothered look as she began to do what most people do, talk and give away precious information that the psychic would pick up. Words is just as much energy as parapsychology. Azarias was ready to catch a big attitude on the spot but the presence of Giles and the other individual turned his quick frown into a face of victory. Whoever the individual was they were not giving off ordinary human energy. But Azarias wasn't in the mood to ask questions.

Did the Psychic want to defend himself and say something? Yes. Throw the chick clean out the window? Yes. But did it mean he wanted to lose his shot in showing Giles he was about this watcher life? No is the correct answer. Azarias remembers his watchers words in watching his own emotions, knowing that anger is always ones first enemy. The reveal that Vie was a psychic link was kind of irritating but Vie knew his 'allies' needed to know how to work with him. The situation was beginning to be explained outwardly as Azarias took a mental note of everything he could silently. Knowing his presence was already bothering people wasn't helpful, and it also made it a little hard to open up so he choose to just switch his mind to hunter mode. As he listened to Giles and kept a firm and straight face the word 'Buffy' might've slipped out of the head watcher's mouth. Azarias could feel his spirit guides nudge him in his head. Azarias did a quick turn to the body he was looking at.

'As in..Oh...OH.....OHHHHHHHH'

red alarms flared on the inside but the outside was a firm and ready watcher for the move by quickly looking back to Giles. Buffy was one of his women crush wednesdays he researched about but never met. If he already wasn't motivated now? he was all in. The energy signature with red hair kind of didn't help make Azarias feel comfy but Giles made it known Azarias was appreciated. He wouldn't let any of them down. As the plan began to set in motion Azarias made his movements as Willow began to prepare. "This Clear Quartz Crystal Ball has my energy on it. Should anything happen this also have a connection to me. Call it a back up plan. I figured something told me to bring it. Didn't know why tho. I do now." Azarias pulled a clear crystal ball from the black bag along with a crystal stand he placed on a nearby counter. Azarias woke up not knowing why he would've needed the ball but he was glad he followed his intuition. Azarias turned to look at Giles and gave him one noble nod along with one statement. As a psychic he could feel the pressure around people's energy field - Giles was showing a need for a little support.

"Giles the plan will work. And judging by the determination in this room I'd say we will be back before you know it."

A friendly pat on Giles arm was administered before moving in position. Azarias was more positive than he'd like to admit sometimes but he did have a soft spot for Giles. He wouldn't have him feeling such a level of down without saying something - Azarias gave him one more personal nod while in position before getting the Willow treatment. Thumbs, candles, connections, and old words were being applied to the plan. Azarias closed his eyes and began meditative breathing to ready himself for the hunt. Azarias could feel all the energy she was channeling, and the energy that was shifting and changing to become something deep. Azarias eyes and focused remained on his inner strength as the psychic connections between the three of them became stronger than he was able to suppress. being a psychic he was sensitive to stuff. But that's for another story. Azarias felt the portal open without him having to open his eyes. With one word Azarias took off into the portal without looking back. He knew the mission, the players, a little of the setting, and the back plan - It was time to get started.
