The evenings were only marginally cooler than they had been during the summer. Marcel could still smell the flowers that bloomed and how they perfumed the air. There was a hint of jasmine and azaleas along with roses that combined with the scent of food drifting in the air around him. It was a heady combination that made him glad to be alive in this magical city. This is where he was born. He breathed this combination of food and flowers practically every day of his life and he couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. This city was in his blood.

He had dressed for the cool evening, a three fourths sleeved gray shirt and black pants along with his usual black leather shoes. His thoughts shifted and changed as he moved towards the area of town that had restaurants. He figured it was time to have some crawfish etoufee. He didn’t need to eat human food and it never filled that hunger that blood did but he liked it nonetheless and it was a good way to build community.

The café he walked to had wonderful smells connected with it and he waited his turn in line to order. There were times when he just wanted to be like everyone else. Once his order was done he made his way to the table with a glass of sweet tea. Glancing about he found the table that would let him see folks coming and going. He wasn’t paranoid per sec so much as he needed to keep his wits about him. The Michaelsons filled his thoughts too much and his relationship with them was complicated to say the least. Some of them, like Elijah, he couldn’t stand. That man had enough arrogance coursing through him it was a wonder he could fit his head through the door. It seemed like each of the Mikaelsons liked finding the cardinal sins and excelling in them. It was like a twisted game of S3ven with everyone else never knowing until the last minute what was in the box.

Shaking that grim thought off he nodded as the waitress brought his food. Taking his spoon he dug into the fantastic meal with proper appreciation. He needed something to get his mind off of wondering when the Mikaelsons would strike. For all that, his thoughts seemed to linger on Rebekah. She was his Achilles heel. He’d loved her since he’d been a human and that passion never fully left. He could divert himself for a while with flings but even he had to admit it was just to drive out memories of Rebekah. He hated that thought but it was true. His whole fling with Cami had been a way to drive the immortal blonde from his mind and it just hadn’t worked. Luckily Cami had realized this and they’d parted on good terms. He hated to think that Cami would hate him. He still valued her friendship. Shaking off his wandering melancholy he focused on his meal and the sound of jazz filling the air.

but this is getting
good now
Tonight was a rather beautiful one, so Rebekah decided to take her mind off of things with a leisurely stroll down her favourite district in the city. The sights and the sounds captivating. From close to far away, she could see people doing different things. Some going for a drink, some for a walk, some for food and some for no reason other than it being a gorgeous day, like she.

The scents of coffee and beignets lingered in the air causing her stomach to rumble in anticipation of what was to come as her heeled feet took her closer to the cafe with each step. A smile growing on her features as she strode, when a small breeze blew by and an unmistakeable scent hit her nose. Marcel, the one who got away the one whom she had always loved. To her, Marcel was the one person of whom she thought her brother would approve of her marrying but once again she was not in favor of love, lately it seemed she never would be. The list of men in her life nothing but disappointments, no one a greater one than he. He was the one person she thought would never tire of fighting for her but he too was afraid of Niklaus.

She should have just kept on soldiering down the street and to her destination but there was always something about him that pulled her in, even if she didn't want it to. Turning left to cross the street, she walked up to him and said.Hello,"

He had just started to pick himself up from the last time Rebekah had torn his heart out and here she was yet again using her looks to her advantage and try to take him unaware. He didn’t even want to acknowledge her existence. Why did vampires not get the modern concept of goodbye? They kept popping back in your life wanting something from you and it was almost never reciprocal. Take take take, that seemed to be the Mikaelson’s mantra. Screw the little guy if they aren’t useful.

Marcel was over it and the woman who stood before him trying to make nice. She never accepted one iota of guilt for the hell she put him through when she reeled him in and tossed him aside. It was always his fault or Klaus’s fault or her father. Always some man was the reason she was too scared to own her own mistakes. All her talk about being a liberated woman and yet when Klaus snapped his fingers she ran back like an obedient dog.

She didn’t even bother coming up with a plan for them to be together. Other people had to put themselves on the line for her. Other people came up with plans that made her life easier; Not one jot of mental energy was used by her to get what she wanted or needed. She couldn’t be bothered. All she’d ever had to do was bat those blue eyes and men killed themselves and put themselves in danger for her.

And yet, in spite of it all he loved her and hated himself for it. His old manners came to the forefront and he rose from his chair respectfully, “Hello. You might as well have a seat since you’re here.” His words did not echo his body motions and he felt disconnected from himself. “What did you want?” He grabbed his chair and sat back down. He didn’t want to let his old feelings rise to the surface any more than they had as he sat there with his meal in front of him. The confusion he felt did not show on his face thankfully. He was glad he had learned how to do a decient poker face in his time with the Mikaelsons.

A
grin grew on her features as she took a seat humoring him for the moment. "I wish I could say something along the lines of I was out looking for you but that would be a lie and I wouldn't want to do you a disservice like that, I was out to grab a coffee then perhaps do some shopping". He always assumed the worst of her, even when she asked him to run away with her, leaving every single semblance of what she had come to know as family over the years for him.

She was willing to give it all up for the chance to be with him and she was rejected, so sorry for moving on with her life or at least trying to when he had the nerve to ask her what she wanted from him. The answer was obvious, she wanted him though she would never allow herself to be rejected twice instead of saying what she felt she met his words with icy ones.

A waitress came over and asked her if she would like anything,"No thank you I wont be staying" There was no one like without him and now that he was back in it, she couldn't imagine not being around him even if he didn't feel the same way.

One could only pour their heart out so much before rejection could break it once more, she had more than enough heartbreaks in her lifetime.

His eyes crinkled with happieness and his grin that he had tried to suppress came forth unbidden. At least she was trying to be somewhat social, “Ahh. Well I have it on good authority that the next block over is having a sidewalk sale.” It was an attempt to offer an olive branch to her. He hated fighting her. They were better together, not apart. He knew that and she knew it too. He took a sip of his drink and felt the caffeine kick in, warming his muscles and his blood as he sat there and tried to figure out a reason to keep talking to her. He needed to for all his dislike of what had happened between him and her family.

“Rebekah wait.” He said quietly, “We need to talk. There’s a lot we need to discuss.” He hoped that she would wait long enough to speak with him. He did care for her. He was just trying to figure out how to explain to her that it was difficult to be in love with someone whose brother was wanting him gone. How could she expect the two of them to be together if he was expected to leave his home? How could she reconcile her brother’s obsession with the city and his paranoid need to control everything?

“How do you expect this to work between us? Your brother wants me to be gone. That’s not exactly conducive to dating. Not to mention the conflict it puts us both in. Your brother has no patience to manage the city AND raise a child. Lets be realistic, Rebekah. He’s not thinking clearly. The day to day minutia of running a city would bore him to tears and prevent him from being a good parent. He can’t manage an entire city of Supernatural creatures and have time for a family. Babies need constant care. You can’t just ignore them when you have to meet with the factions of a city. Are you going to be their cheap version of a babysitter while he wines and dines the faction of the city with Hayley?”

The Mikaelsons were so delusional. They thought they could do everything, “You don’t even know where Elijah is..” It just boggled his mind how any of this was supposed to work. How would Klaus raise a healthy daughter when he had to vanquish his enemies? You couldn’t hide everything from her. You couldn’t go attend PTA meetings with blood on your hands. He sipped his coffee and brooded silently while he waited for her reaction.
