It is such a shame that we have so few fae characters on the boards! They are a constant source of inspiration and magic for a story, and can be easily tied into the plot and canon of the storyline on the boards. We need more fae characters!

A few ideas for people: Look at the canon list! More and more fae characters are being introduced in the canon universes, and as they are, staff will add them there.

Also, my character personally comes from a large family. He has an active bounty on his head, with a long history, and ties to both the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Check out his bio and see if there is a place you would like to fit in. I am really hoping someone will want to pick up his sisters at some point, or perhaps a fellow Raven of the Unseelie (friend or foe!)

about

For an in depth look at Val’s character, please read his bio here.

friends

Throughout his life, Val has made more friends than enemies. Even people that he was on the opposing side of because of war or alliances can never find anything truly wrong or bad to say about him. His is jovial by nature, and even in his trickster days has never been cruel. He is motivated by his desire to help people, and has aided technical “enemies” when they were in their times of need.

One individual that truly stands out among everyone, though, is his brother in arms, Kailen Chon. Since they were young, Chon was always by his side. In fact, he can be said that he is the main reason why Val was able to remain such a good soul for as long as he has, even in a dark world. Val’s truest friend in the world is Chon, and he would give up anything for him as sure as he would for his own family. Chon even followed him when Val became a Raven, an oath that Chon did not need to take, as it meant he left behind everything he had with the Seelie Throng. They are as brothers, and Val will never forget him, even in his exile…

enemies

Val has lived a long time, but surprisingly has not culminated too many enemies. His time in Ironside before his current stint was centuries ago, so any mortals who wanted to contend with him are long since dead. That would have only been during his time in the Crusades, though, as Val has a tendency to make more enemies than friends. Even his recent problems with the law had him coming out with no real enemies. He did, however, make a few unfriendly acquaintances with some crime lords when he worked with ATF and the FBI and turned in parts of his own drug ring. This is all, however, rather mild and very recent.

His largest enemy, as a whole, is technically the entirety of the Unseelie Court. That might seem impossible, but this is really because of his exile from the Court, and all of Faerie, because of the “injury” and permanent scarring that he dealt to the Queen. Though she was assaulting him at the time, he was not within in technical rights to attack his sovereign, and she took it very personally. She banished him, and declared him hunted (though a true Wild Hunt was not called down on him. To name him “Oathbreaker” would be to call to light all the cruelty and abuse she had been dishing out to her Ravens, and while these have been rumored at and hinted towards, it is very different for them to be confirmed.) Anyone may be allowed to Hunt and kill him, though, and he will have no protection from his people or his Court. It also means that, on more than one occasion, he has had to face down his (former) fellow Ravens, but none of them had the true heart to bring him in or destroy him, so he always managed to conveniently “get away.” The Queen had stopped sending Ravens out after him… Until recently…

family

Uncharacteristically for a sidhe, Val comes from a very large family. His mother and father have been together for many, many years, but because of his mother’s pedigree, there was never an issue with fertility, like with the other sidhe of the Realms. Val himself is the second youngest child, and only son within the family. Since his exile, he has not seen a single one of them, but loves them all very much and would do anything for them.

father's name, Asher Hillchild (True Name redacted)
mother's name, Rue Papillion (True Name redacted)
siblings, 5 sisters, all named for plants: Wisteria, Bay, Sage, Angelica, and Hollyhock. (True Names redacted)

He also swore a blood bond to all the Ravens of the Unseelie Court. He view many of them to be as brothers, and, as such, does not regret what he did to get him exiled. He just hopes that they did not receive the brunt of Queen’s wrath for what he did…

lovers

The fae view sex differently from a lot of other species that share this world. The sidhe use sex for many reasons. It’s used as a bargaining chip, or a way to exchange or share power, or as a way to escape boredom, or a way to get to know a friend just a little better. Sex without emotion is common. Living for centuries, Val has taken on many lovers. A more able questions when it comes to the Fair Ones is whether or not they have found Love.

True Love is rare among the sidhe, since they are spending so much of their time worrying about themselves, and True Love by its nature is selfless. Val very much believes that he can see True Love between his parents, and they have never denied it. True Love is easy for the sidhe, though, once they find that once in a lifetime person. They know, the moment that they see them, that this is it. So when he met Buffy Summers, even though they were in Hell at the time, he was certain of who she was when they touched hands. He never had the opportunity to say anything, though, knowing that coming out of the gate with declarations of True Love does not usually sit well with mortals. They were separated, though, when they were both returned to Ironside at the end of the Demon Trials, the action that brought her to Hell in the first place. He is now on a self-imposed quest to find Buffy and protect her.

Also see “distinguishing features”
- - - - build, muscular, toned, trained
- - - - distinguishing marks, Red blood, (which for a Sidhe is pretty distinct.) Without any glamour up, Val has light green skin that simply looks pale unless he is in the right light. His hair always looks like there is a gentle breeze running through it, and his face always looks lit as it by gentle sunlight. (With his glamour up, he appears as a normal human.

- - - - Play By, Aaron Tyler-Johnson
- - - - val likes,
• Plants and generally all things green
• Music, especially acoustic or songs that are “fun”
• Pop culture of all kinds (Ironside is interesting!)
• Tricks, though not as much as he used to. Age and experience tempered his trickster soul, but he still playful.
• Being strong enough to protect those around him, be they strangers or loved ones.
- - - - val hates,
• Unnecessary violence
• Rapists and violent sadists
• Pollution
• Lies and cruelty
• Skeptics and non-believers, or at least the ones who do it to be difficult
- - - - strengths,
• Sidhe: Being a Sidhe, Val comes in with above-human strength and dexterity. He is on par with most vampires and creatures of a similar strength level. Something as powerful as, say, a Turok-Han he would be able to manage in a fight, though he might come out a little injured, and a mass of them would probably get the upper hand on him. As part of his almost plantlike biology, Val can heal rapidly as long as he is in contact with direct soil. His bare skin must be touching it, and the more contact that is made, the better. Val also comes from a line of Sidhe blessed with high fertility, which is only useful when it comes to political arrangements, really. He has access to glamour and is quite proficient at it, with the ability to create a Seeming for himself (to hide his true Fae form) and create illusions (mostly for cloaking) on his own person.
• Hand of the Green: With this hand, Val can manipulate the world of the plants around him. Generally, the plant life flourishes around the places where he lives, and wherever he sleeps he will wake to a bed of flowers curling around his bed and around his body. (These flowers will often be flowers that symbolize the mood he is currently in.) This is more than just an involuntary power, though. It means that he can, at will, call on his control of the natural green elements, using the power that lives in his right hand. He can control plant life in variably every form, and plants call him Friend. (As of yet, Val has not developed a second Hand of Power. He may never, but it is possible.)
• Botanist: Not only does Val had an affinity for plants, he has a lot of practical knowledge as well. He learned a lot at a young age, but when he came to Ironside he realized that there was a scientific application as well. He is a graduate student at the University of Sunnydale, studying botany and loving everything that he is learning.
• Raven (former): Val’s time as a Raven got him into the practice of working hard to be a physically capable fighter. He tends to focus on non-lethal ways to end a conflict, but is not afraid to get fatal when the moment calls for it. He studied unarmed combat, various forms of melee weapons, and marksmanship. When it comes to ranged weapons, Val prefers a pistol. They tend to end fights just with the appearance of one, and they are efficient in their job, and keep in the vein of ending a fight quickly. With his position also came a level of respect and credibility, even after his exile. It earned him the camaraderie and love of many other Ravens under the rule of Nicnevin, as well as an understanding between them that they had been through tough times together. He also developed and incredibly high pain tolerance due to the abuse Nicnevinput him through.
• Selfless: At the end of the day, Val rarely thinks about himself in the grand scheme of things. He has a tendency to want to do what it right, and always attempts to help those in need. He is a charitable soul. Sacrifice comes very easily to him, as he does not hold on to many worldly possessions, and he puts the care of others before his care for himself.
• Wealthy: In that same vein, Val made a lot of money off of his illegal contraband, and rather than spend a lot of it frivolously, he held on to it for a very rainy day. While much of it ends up going to charity, he also took the time to hold on to a good sized nest egg and invest smartly where he could. He listened to the advice of his business major co-student and partner in crime, and it seemed to pay off for him. Now he keeps the money where people cannot find it and lives rather comfortably.
- - - - weaknesses,
• Hemophobia: Val gets physically ill and faint at the sight of blood, especially if the blood is red. This is his body’s way of deal with the trauma that he experienced in the past. (See History for details.)
• Exile: While Val was a predominant member of the Seelie Court, and a Raven of the Unseelie Court later, his past actions caused him to not only be banished from Faerie, but to also have a death sentence placed on his head. This means that while he may have access to his powers, he cannot use anything beyond his glamour too frequently, or those that are after him might find him.
• Former Felon/ Snitch: Due to events described in his history, “Ben Forester” has a reputation for turning in many of his criminal friends when it looked like he was going to get his nose into trouble. It earned him his current identity and fresh start in life, but he is known for turning in his criminal cohorts. However, he did also develop the reputation for selling a damn fine product, and since he obviously is not on the criminal side of the fence anymore, he might be sought after for his methods… by any means necessary. Some want him dead. Some want him alive.
• Fae Weaknesses: Val is susceptible to all weaknesses of the Fae. While being Ironside had helped him build up a bit of a resistance to it, he can still be Ironsick and injured by iron weapons. He can be compulsed to act under the power of his True Name. Clover has a warding effect against his glamour. He cannot lie directly, and he is held to the letter of the word for any True Promise that he makes.
• Romantic at Heart: While it might seem a bit foolish to say, Val is a bleeding heart romantic. He grew up with many of the creatures of fairy tales being people he knew personally. He believes that True Love is real, and that his is out there somewhere. He believes that love should be defended at all cost, and will often do the “true” or “right” thing over the “smart” thing. When it comes to matters of love and the heart, he does not believe that people lie about it, so he can easily be manipulated by person who uses it as an angle to manipulate him.
• Unchecked Masochist: The abuse and torture he suffered at the hands of Nicnevin made him crack along a very fine line in his mind. He needed to find a way to make the pain bearable, and so he found that sanctuary in masochism. But he also learned what happens when he says “no.” This made for a very dangerous combination in his head when it comes to being placed in that position. If it involves pain, he usually defaults to a pleasure. However, even when the pain begins to be at levels that are too much, he will not say no or ask for someone to stop. He would rather risk death than the consequences of saying “no.” This can cause for dangerous situations if he is involved in many private situations, as well as effecting his behavior under torture or extreme injury.
- - - - ambitions,
• Going to college to learn Ironside’s methods of sustainable energy and botany. He hopes that maybe by helping the environment on Ironside, he can save Faerie along with it.
• To one day be able to return to Faerie and see his family and loved ones again without the fear of them being caught in the crossfire of his sentence, or them feeling obligated to turn him in to authorities.
• To fall in love. No, really, to fall in love, and to have to be a love like in the fairy tales. It doesn’t need to be the “damsel in distress rescued by the knight” kind of love, as long as it is a Love that is true, courageous, and complete.
- - - - fears,
• That he will be found by those that pursue him, and brought back before Queen Nicnevin before execution. He fears that even more than death.
• The loss of magic, in Faerie, Ironside, and all other realms.
• That his past, and all his wrong doings, will catch up to him and injure others in the crossfire.
- - - - hometown, Seelie Mound, Faerie
- - - - father's name, Asher Hillchild (True Name redacted)
- - - - mother's name, Rue Papillion (True Name redacted)
- - - - siblings, 5 sisters, all named for plants: Wisteria, Bay, Sage, Angelica, and Hollyhock. (True Names redacted)
- - - - non-blood family, The Ravens of the Unseelie Court (like brothers)
- - - - overall history,
Val has been many things in his life. He has been a brother. He has been a son. You have probably heard of him, though the name “Val” seems so normal that you may not be aware that you know him. That is the point, though. Such is the way with the Fae. With the Sidhe. With the Kindly Ones. With the Gentle Strangers. So many names just to call their kind, and Val was no exception. The Romans called him Silvanus when they plowed their fields and prayed against the darkness of the woods. When the Celts called his name, they asked for Cernunnos, though it may not have been him they were expecting. When he knew Robin Hood, they called him “Jack in the Green.” And in all these names, there is truth and there is not. He has always been one of the Green Men, and as such was one of the many faces that represented the names that were called to and worshipped, just like his father and his father’s father.

Except for Jack. That was all him.

But the years took their toll on all of Faerie, and soon there were fewer believers. As the faith faded, so did the magic, and as the magic faded so did the glory of the Fae. True, they are still glorious to behind, and mighty in their strength, but they are shadows of what they were. Val himself never held ire against the mortal world for this. Times changed. But many of the Fae took insult, and abandoned Ironside. Others could no longer come when the names were no longer called. Some Faded. Others died. But Val and his family remained.

He was the only son of six siblings, a blessing from Danu herself upon his family. The Fae are, even today, a dying breed, and fertility is rate among them. It was said, however, that Nantosuelta’s blood ran through the veins of Val’s mother, and the union to his father birthed many strong children, all who lived to adulthood. Val, however, was the only male child, and the second youngest among them. Strict gender roles were never an issue in his household. Many of the girls that came before him were well on their way to making names for themselves in whatever professions their hearts desired. In fact, it came as a shock that he was born with his little stem, but they loved him. He was a gentle soul, and when he said he wanted to learn more about Ironside and the folk that dwelled there, he was encouraged. He came to love the realm of men, and what it had to offer.

But politics have a way of moving in an ruining everything. Born among the Seelie, Val knew the life of the Court of Light for his whole life. He was a young Lord, and earned other names during his adventures. However, there was more than just his name to call into value. In some strange, obscure way, Val was actually in line for the throne. The queen, Silarial , of the Seelie was aunt to his mother, making him the grand-nephew of the queen. Worse off, the queen was not fertile herself and could not produce an heir, though she tried to keep this information to rumors alone. Rumors were damaging enough, and she was soon feeling pressure within her Court to find a suitable heir of her own blood. Val was quickly implemented in a scheme.

The Seelie Queen made a diplomatic arrangement with the Queen of the Unseelie Court, Nicnevin, to allow a member of her own blood enter the Unseelie Court as consort to Nicnevin. There were concerns of inbreeding among the Unseelie, and the new blood would aid in that issue. Since Val came from a long line of those blessed with fertility, and he was the only male in that family, it was seen that he would become a member of the Unseelie Court as a member of the Queen’s Ravens, her personal bodyguards and consorts. When he impregnated her, she would offer up the child to the Seelie Court as heir, while Val would stay with the Unseelie as a commodity and to possibly provide the Queen with more children. Val’s family was reluctant, but the order was clear, and they were led to believe that he would come to no harm. They did not know that Val’s safety had not been part of the arrangement.

Nicnevin was a cruel ruler. She was well known for being a sadist, but at first Val was spared any particularly venomous attention. He was still horrified by the things he witnessed, and it brought him closer to his fellow Ravens. They were a fraternity against her abuse, and Val would not know until later just how much they kept him as safe as they could for as long as they could. Soon, however, Nicnevin became greedy for her child. Encounters with the Queen were met with a reluctant Val, and his reluctance played its part in his family’s gift of fertility. So long as he did not truly wish to have a child with her, no matter how subconscious or conscious the desire may be, she would not conceive. Never one to attempt to catch flies with honey, she turned to vitriol.

The abuse was relentless. The intensity of it has been redacted for the sake of keeping this application with the necessity for a MATURE label. And still he would not give in to her. After centuries of pain and cruelty at her hands, Nicnevin changed her tactic. She promised to take it out not on Val, but on his fellow Ravens, many of whom were already suffering horrors of their own at her hands. Not wishing others to suffer for him, Val agreed to take Nicnevin to bed and and attempt to give her the child she wanted. But he had no such plans to go through it. While they were alone, Val lashed out with his power and weapons, finally cracking under the strain of years at her mercy. His attack was ferocious, and while she was far more powerful than he could ever hope to kill, he lashed with poisoned thorns and barbs at her face, leaving her deep wounds that would scar her pretty face.

He knew what he had done. He knew that he would never be forgiven, so he did not waste time. His fellow Ravens did what they could to help him escape, and Val found himself fleeing from Faerie all together and into Ironside. Queen Nicnevin declared Val a traitor to the Crown for his crimes. He was named Exile of Faerie and it was declared that he would never be allowed to come back. In addition, a death sentence was placed on his head, and should be ever return and be discovered by another member of the Fair Folk, he was to be killed on sight or brought before the Unseelie for immediate execution. In his fear and Exile, Val ran and did not stop for many years.

Years in Ironside had him adapting very quickly. He took on the identity of Benjamin Forester. He learned in his travels than magic and nature were both in danger in the realms of men, and he decided to spend his years in Exile attempting to aid that. He needed more information, though, and he enrolled himself into college in southern Florida. His dorm mate was a business major who took him under his wing to show who he assumed was a sheltered child a life worth living. He introduced him to the world of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and while Val never fell deep enough into the lifestyle for it to be a problem, he was fascinated with the world of herbal narcotics. Particularly, marijuana.

As a botany major, he started to experiment with finding a new strain of the plant to create the perfect specimen. It was a mild obsession of his, but one that did not go unnoticed by his dorm mate and best friend. The two of them went into work with each other, Ben handling the plant and his friend handling the business arrangements. It was not long before they had a very desired product and a stable market to offer it. In the matter of three years, their junior years of college, they were particularly famous, relatively rich, and cemented in the community. But like all things, this could not last.

It was not long before people starting honing in on who this pair of entrepreneurs were, and college kids are seen as an easy target for both people in the drug industry and the legal authorities trying to stop them. Soon, the street groups and cartels were coming down on them hard, and it looked like they were in over their heads. Then, the DEA came knocking. All of this attention was starting to gain the focus of bounty hunters that had been out to get Val’s/Ben’s head to drag it back to the Courts. Luckily, though, the DEA wanted to make a deal first. They said that if Ben and his friend turned over information about their network and business associates, they would name them as associates in the trial and they could walk, so long as they didn’t dip their noses into drug crime ever again. Ben Forester was given the new identity of Valerian Fitzgerald.

He liked going back to his old name. He felt more like himself again. The DEA suggested that he go to a school far away from Florida, so he found one on the west coast in a little town called Sunnydale. The University of Sunnydale came highly recommended, and it just seemed to stand out to him as the kind of place he wanted to be. He starts up classes in the beginning to the upcoming semester.

Also see “distinguishing features”
- - - - build, muscular, toned, trained
- - - - distinguishing marks, Red blood, (which for a Sidhe is pretty distinct.) Without any glamour up, Val has light green skin that simply looks pale unless he is in the right light.
